When I was a kid, I loved LDS General Conference weekend. It meant NO CHURCH!!!! Haha. My parents would go to all the sessions they could, but they really wouldn't force us to go to any, well, maybe the Sunday morning one. And even then, I would just sleep through the whole thing, in the back of our chapel, the lights off, eyelids getting heavy, soft cushiony pew. You get the picture. I had little care or idea about the major gospel feast I was missing.
My attitude about conference changed, I wish earlier, but it changed while I was in the MTC during April 1999 conference. Every session, every talk, every sentence, every word, I was transfixed and blown away. I still vividly remember a talk given by Elder Jeffery R. Holland about Fathers. And I still remember the strong spirit I felt in gratitude for my wonderful father.
From then on, I did everything I could to listen to conference, especially on my mission, where, I needed so much to listen to the deeply inspired words of representatives of Christ. I love Conference. There is so much going on in those Conference talks. It is very direct doctrine coming straight from the mouths of God's prophets! They are so precise and so cutting edge in the way that they clarify God's gospel and how we're supposed to live. It's like a LIVING SCRIPTURE. THESE GUYS ARE PROPHETS OF GOD! WHAT THEY SAY IS SCRIPTURE. It is scripture, SPECIFICALLY for US in October of 2009. What they say is so pointed on what God would have us hear. There are so many gems of wisdom and love and Gospel of Jesus Christ planted in the words of General Conference. Listen for it, cause it will make you see the Gospel in new and different ways. And when you do, that's the Spirit of God giving you those insights.
